Columbia University, established in 1754, is a private Ivy League research university in Upper Manhattan, New York City. Columbia contains the oldest college in the state of New York and is the fifth chartered institution of higher learning in the United States, making it one of nine colonial colleges founded prior to the Declaration of Independence. It was established as King's College by royal charter of George II of Great Britain and renamed Columbia College in 1784 following the American Revolutionary War. The college has produced numerous distinguished alumni. It has been among the most selective colleges in the United States since its founding. With an undergraduate acceptance rate of 5.8%, it currently stands as the third most selective college in the United States and the second most selective in the Ivy League.

The trustees of columbia university in the city of new york is a private, nonsectarian, nonprofit institution of higher education whose activities are concentrated at two locations in new york city and extend across the globe. The university provides instruction through sixteen undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools. It operates a variety of research institutes and a library system to support its teaching, learning, and research activities. The university enrolls approximately 32,429 full-time and part-time students and employs approximately 17,196 full-time employees, including 6,223 full-time faculty members and research staff.


The university, through the columbia university irving medical center and its medical faculty practice plan, provides direct patient care and other clinical and educational services to hospitals and other health care institutions through contractual agreements for services. The clinical faculty handled approximately 2.2 million outpatient and emergency room visits and participated in instruction and supervision of 664 university medical students and 969 residents and fellows at new york presbyterian hospital.


The university performs research, training, and other services under grants and contracts with agencies of the federal government and other sponsoring organizations.
