Overview

The University of Notre Dame du Lac is a private, non-profit Catholic research university located adjacent to South Bend, Indiana, in the United States. The main campus covers in a suburban setting and it contains a number of recognizable landmarks, such as the Golden Dome, the "Word of Life" mural, the Notre Dame Stadium, and the Basilica. The school was founded on November 26, 1842, by Father Edward Sorin, CSC, who was also its first president.

The University intercollegiate athletics program enabled student-athletes to compete in twenty-six sports programs at the NCAA Division I level.

The University's Institute for Educational Initiatives strives to improve the K-12 education of all young people, particularly the disadvantaged through a variety of programs. The largest such program is the ACE program, a two-year service program offering college graduates the opportunity to serve as full-time teachers in under-resourced schools across the United States and several foreign countries. Additionally, the University provides volunteers and financial support for other organizations, both directly and through its Donor Advised Fund Program.
